South Carolina: South of the Border

South of the Border is a huge travel plaza kind of place that has MILLIONS of fireworks, horrible advertising, landmarks out of nowhere, and all the good stuff.

Got into South Carolina, and I am safely in Charlston with Xavsbud, his wife prepared a very good meal of southern Grits and Shrimp! AWESOME!!

The South: Planning

Planning for tomorrow’s trip. I have nowhere to stay for the next several states.

I have Xavsbud in Charlston, SC, and Morio in Austin, TX – So I have Alabama, Mississippi, Louisanna, and East Texas to drive through.

Raleigh, NC

Raleigh is the capital of the Tar Heel state. Not sure why they call it that, but if my brakes go out, and I have to stop by putting my foot out the door, I’ll have some tar heels!! 😀
Also note the MPG I got on this last tank – 38 MPG – GREAT!!

Richmond, VA

We got a pretty good picture of the state house here. The front side would have been impossible to get a good picture with the cars.

We got off I-85 at Exit 53, so I took a pic. For those non-Scirocco readers – 53 is the Volkswagen platform code of the Scirocco. It’s in the VIN number too.  two16vs challenged us to get pictures with the number 53 in it – so here it is!!

Also: note the menu!! 😀

Washington, DC!

Fraser and I drove to the most important capital today, the Federal Capital! Also: I’m not sure what is correct: Capital, or Capitol. One means money, the other is the places I’m visiting.

Gas mileage – I was stuck in traffic for almost half of the last tank, much of the rest of it was for city driving.  32MPG is still not bad. My goal for tuning is to get above 40MPG constant, and at least 45 MPG when I’m driving really nice!

Arrived in Phoenix, MD

Spark Plugs – I only use NGK BP6ET plugs in my car. No, NGK is not paying me to say this. They work great, they’re cheap, and they are easy to find.

I also included shots of the hood vinyl, and the car parked at frd206’s place, which seems to have many garages! 😀

Mike in Baltimore

smithma7 works in downtown Baltimore, MD. I met him near his work, he has a STACK of $1 bills for me. $96 of them to be exact. Two for each state. Each has websites written on it for wheresgeorge.com and Mike’s own Grum.com
Thanks, Mike!!

Mike also took this picture:

Delaware

Posting from my first fuel stop in Smyrna, Delaware.

Getting close to Dover, the capital of The First State!

Final Packing

I’m leaving very soon, just throwing the last of the stuff into the car, food, clothes, and toiletries.

First Stop: Dover, Delaware!

The Schedule is Almost Finished!

Thanks to all who have donated in the last few weeks. I am above $1000 now, and I’m going to leave planning to make some money along the way fixing computers, and helping people out.
The Schedule is done in software, I just have to update the schedule page now.

Departure Date Set: July 21st

I am going to leave on Monday, July 21st for the 48 state trip. I’ll be driving down with Fraser Dachille – known as frd206 on the Vortex.

I’ll stay with him north of Washington, DC that night.

Please visit the Donate page and throw me a buck or two! I’m at 10% of the goal as of this post! I thank you so much for this!!
